Since October 2023, Israel’s genocidal military campaign in Gaza has led to the collapse of nearly every pillar of the territory’s healthcare system. The Israeli occupation forces bombed hospitals, killed medical personnel, obstructed humanitarian convoys, and decimated critical infrastructure. Major human rights organizations have documented that the destruction of healthcare in Gaza is systematic and deliberate; even so, they often stop short of naming what this truly represents: not an isolated wartime tactic but the culmination of a long-standing policy. Indeed, the erasure of Gaza’s health system began long before this latest episode of the genocide against the Palestinian people. It is the result of a sustained, calculated strategy aimed at rendering Palestinians unhealable, unhelpable, and ultimately perishable.

This policy brief introduces de-healthification as the governing logic of health under settler colonialism: the systematic degradation, obstruction, and weaponization of the very conditions that make health of the Indigenous population possible. In Palestine, Israeli de-healthification does not simply “attack healthcare;” it restructures health itself into a domain of domination, where illness and vulnerability are deliberately produced and administered. Within this colonial regime, unhealth becomes both a condition for rule and an instrument of control. De-healthification thus functions as the health-specific manifestation of the logic of elimination, through which the settler colonial state sustains itself by manufacturing illness, dependency, and the degradation of the conditions of life among the colonized Palestinian population.

A few days ago, I was walking with a friend through the tents in al-Mawasi, southern Gaza. We were heading to a small cafe I have frequented since my roof became fabric.

The ground beneath us was mud, the winter air heavy, and the faces around us heavier still. We were talking about the formation of the US-led “Board of Peace”, in a phase of the so-called ceasefire that is supposedly defined by stability and reconstruction.

At that exact moment, the sound of an explosion tore through the air. We stopped talking, and I found myself asking: how is this a ceasefire? How can peace be declared while explosions still echo above our heads?

As they rounded a corner slowly, a few minutes from home, young Khaled and Mustafa recounted on Sunday, their mother, Waad, 35, asked her husband to pull over and take Othman from her so she could get something from her bag on the floor. Suddenly, the boys said, they saw laser pointers shining on their family from every direction, heard their mother scream, heard their father say “God is great” — and then heard a deafening fusillade of gunfire.

The Israeli police and military, in a joint statement Sunday morning, said that border police officers and soldiers, while on a mission in Tammun to arrest suspected terrorists, had “sensed danger” after a vehicle “accelerated towards” them and “responded by shooting.” They said the circumstances of the episode were being investigated.

Israeli air strikes have killed at least 13 Palestinians including two boys, a pregnant woman, and nine police officers in war-torn Gaza.

An attack on Sunday hit a house in the urban refugee camp of Nuseirat in central Gaza, killing four people, including a couple in their 30s and their 10-year-old son, according to the nearby Al-Aqsa Hospital.

Now, a plan unveiled by US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law might just bring such a dystopian image to reality.

Jared Kushner, who serves as a US special envoy, announced plans for a “New Gaza” - complete with shiny skyscrapers, coastal tourist attractions and entire districts dedicated to business and commerce.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Kushner told global leaders that the Palestinian enclave would be run under “free market economy principles”.

He said these would seek to mirror the “same mindset and same approach” as Trump’s America.

A criminal court in Nice has sentenced pro-Palestinian activist Amira Zaiter to 15 months in prison following a case centered on her social media activity. Zaiter appeared before the court on Friday, 23 January, after spending several weeks in pretrial detention, during which she was separated from her daughter.

The prosecution targeted posts published on X and Instagram, accusing her of offenses including incitement to hatred, discrimination, and the glorification of terrorism. Prosecutors had requested a harsher sentence, including a longer prison term, registration on France’s S security file, a ban from public office, and financial penalties.

The court ordered 15 months of imprisonment with continued detention, S-file registration, a 10-year ban on holding public office, and damages to several civil parties, including LICRA and CRIF Sud-Est. Supporters note that this is Zaiter’s second conviction linked to her Palestine activism and argue that the ruling reflects an escalating judicial crackdown on pro-Palestine expression in France.

“If the center were to be forcibly closed, and we do fear that this could happen within days, there is no educational alternative for these students. So you’re depriving a large cohort of Palestine refugees of economic opportunities,” Jonathan Fowler, UNRWA’s spokesperson, said.
